The name of
the village is shown on the map of Ptolemey as a town Sedala. This word
in Armenian was pronounced as Sedakha. Armenian linguists found that
letter kh was pronounced as l. In Armenian transcription kh corresponds to the letter l. During 2000 years word Sadakha subjected to phonetical change and turned to the word Satkha.
This village
is also mentioned in medieval sources. Armenian historian Stepanos
Orbelyan (XIII-XIV) in his work “History”, describing the rising of
Orbely dukes in 1176-1177, mentions Satakhe (Satkha) castle, where
Georgian Tsar George the 3rd was (Satakhe was one of Tsar’s
estates in Djavakhk and bordered with Orbelyans’ property). Headquarters
of insurgent people was in Agarak (Lori) relatively not far from
Satkha. At night being informed about the rising, Tsar ran away from
Satkha to Tbilisi. The settlement of Sadakha- Satakha- Satkha during
centuries has been great trading centre, as it was located in the
crossroad of major trading and strategiarmenian-jam
surp Javaxk Satkha people, after the burning of “St. Astvatsatsin” church in Paytashen, according to Akhalkalak’s sample, decided to build dome-shaped church
(in 1856 Armenian people already built St. Khatch church). For this purpose in 1867 they left for Tsalka village, went to parish school to the teacher Eghishe Ter- Stepanyan. Here he invites stonemason jewish specialists, who began building dome-shaped, arched church of Satkha. Eghishe Stepanyan takes the whole responsibility of building the church. It should be mentioned that he is the most vigorous and literate person in the village. In half of 1869, the construction of the church was already finished. In one of the archive documents we know that in 1869 year in the court of a newly-opened church of Satkha there was a preparatory with 48 pupils and the teacher Eghishe Ter- Stepanyan, who finished the local school.
